Yves Behar is a thinker, and one thing he thinks about a lot is the future. You can see it in all of his designs, which range from laptops and cellphone headsets to shoes. Having grown up in a bicultural home, he was influenced both by his East German mother and Turkish father, "One is functional and modernist and the other, expressive and poetic," he says. "I always try to marry the two in my projects." The founder of fuseproject, a San Francisco based organization "dedicated to the emotional experience of brands through storytelling,” Behar explains that "In Europe, it is double nature to evaluate objects based on how they work and how they look," and he is trying to bring this inspiration to every continent.
With that said, as a relatively young designer, Behar has amassed a remarkable career. After graduating from the Art Center College of Design he immediately began working in Silicon Valley for Apple, and has since branched out to include projects in the areas of sport, apparel, technology, and furnishings. He has receiving numerous prestigious awards such as the National Design Award from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Museum, Time Magazine’s Best Invention Award for 2001, and two solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Musee de Design et D’arts Appliques Contemporains. "I believe design's purpose is not only to show us the future, but to bring us the future,” he states.
