Writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson once described a series of creative "zaps" - moments of sudden inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of." Nelson’s lifelong interest in design first led him to study architecture in Rome in the 1930’s. From there he went on to travel across Europe, interviewing leading modern architects for articles to be published in the United States. Perhaps the first of Nelson's zaps, these articles introduced the U.S. designed community to the European avant-garde movement, and Nelson was eventually named an editor of Architectural Forum magazine.
George Nelson’s work with Herman Miller® began after the company’s founder, D.J. DePree, read an article in Life magazine about Nelson’s unique Storagewall design. D.J. DePree saw in this innovative modular storage system the promise of a great designer, and he convinced Nelson to be his director of design. Nelson once wrote that Herman Miller "is not playing follow-the-leader." That's one reason why George Nelson & Associates, Nelson’s design firm, worked with Herman Miller for over 25 years as they shepherded design into the modern era.
