The recipient of numerous awards, he was most recently named the winner of the 2006 National Design Award in Product Design, presented by the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.
Southern California native Don Chadwick has had a lifelong interest in furniture, first learning under the tutelage of his grandfather, a cabinetmaker. Chadwick went on to study design at UCLA, and worked for architect Victor Gruen before establishing his own practice in 1964. For decades, he has pioneered the use of modern materials and processes to create innovative products that have raised market standards. He has collaborated with Knoll® and Herman Miller to produce iconic pieces, and has received many awards over the course of his career.
Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick joined together to create one of Herman Miller’s most well-known designs. Like Stumpf, Chadwick appreciates and is inspired by the Herman Miller approach to furniture: "Herman Miller isn't afraid to take chances on new ideas. That's why the company's been successful for so long, and that's one reason why it's challenging to work for them." In designing the Aeron® Chair, Chadwick and Stumpf took on a huge challenge – making an office chair that truly supports the human form. This required a rethinking of the very idea of a chair. As Bill Stumpf points out, "the human form has no straight lines, it is biomorphic. We designed the chair to be above all biomorphic, or curvilinear, as a metaphor of human form in the visual as well as the tactile sense. There is not one straight line to be found on an Aeron chair.”
